Most kids don't want to wake up early on a Saturday morning to learn about math and science. But the Andrews Institute in the College of Education has a group of 5th and 6th graders that has done just that. As part of the community outreach initiative within the institution, free workshops are offered throughout the year to elementary students.

Four TCU students passed on a traditional spring break at the beach for a week of serving others in Africa. Seniors Chad Dresser, John Burns, Jon Parsons and graduate student Graham Radler spent seven days in Uganda drilling a water well for the town of Kablal, which was in need of clean water.

Highly ranked athletic programs have become the norm rather than the exception for TCU, and the club paintball team is no different. The TCU Paintball team, a university club sport, is currently ranked No. 15 out of 86 teams in the National Collegiate Paintball Association rankings. Junior team member Amir Tafarroji said good competition was hard to find around Fort Worth. The team will drive more than 100 miles to practice at Weber's Paintball near Temple, he said. "We think Weber's is one of the best fields in the state," Tafarroji said.

University social work majors in the Generalist Practice with Communities and Organizations class are asking for student and community support to raise awareness for social work incentives. Senior social work majors Hannah Knipp, Skye Newkirk and Marci Milhollin are trying to promote the Social Work Reinvestment Initiative, a national project to address problems facing the social work industry through loan forgiveness programs for social work majors. Knipp said the initiative's goals are to improve recruitment, retention, reinvestment and research in the social work industry.

The university production of the Tony Award-winning play "The Crucible" will keep the audience thinking about the issues and plot even after the production is over, said Krista Scott, assistant professor of voice and acting. TCU's theatre production of Arthur Miller's play will open at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Hays Theatre. "It is one of those shows that grabs you and doesn't let go until you walk out of the theater, and even then, it doesn't leave you for a while," Scott said.

Jeff Pels, a senior accounting major, walks down Devitt Avenue to a friend's house almost every weekend. On Friday night, the 30-second walk down the street took a bad turn when he and two friends were robbed at gunpoint. Pels said he believed there was little he and the two other victims could have done differently. They were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Phil Record, a member of the university community and an expert in journalism ethics, died Sunday night. Record, 81, suffered a heart attack while driving and crashed his car into a Johnny Carino's restaurant around 7:30 p.m. Sunday off South Hulen Street, according to an article on the Star-Telegram website.
