During a thunderstorm, I pay close attention to any weather updates that appear on my browser or my phone. Even knowing that there could potentially be a tornado within a 50-mile radius freaks me out. I am quite fearful of wind-powered death machines traveling at 50 mph 8212; because that's what I see when I think of tornadoes. But rationally speaking, other people are normal and don't overreact as much as I do.

By the end of October, the Environmental Protection Agency will have completed a proposal requiring states to meet a new national standard for ozone levels in the air. The standard of 85 parts-per-billion of ozone chemicals in the air could be lowered up to 30 percent. The Dallas-Fort Worth area has been breaking that standard for quite some time. What is surprising is the lack of action taken to try and improve not only the region's emission levels, but also the university's commitment to living green.

It was often the case that any speakers who came to campus were received in high anticipation by the community but with very poor attendance. Tonight's speaker, best-selling author Amy Tan, spoke to a full audience tonight at Ed Landreth Auditorium. It's good that a speaker as well known as Amy Tan, author of "The Joy Luck Club" and "The Bonesetter's Daughter," received such a large welcome from the university community. Amy Tan gave a provocative and insightful speech about her inspirations and her writing. It was a speech deserving a large audience.

Panera Bread's decision to list calorie information beside items on its menu boards creates advantages to both the company and consumers. According to Linn Parrish, vice president of public relations for Panera, the decision to add calorie information originated from a 2008 mandate in New York City. By expanding the original decree beyond New York City, Panera sets an example of transparency by willingly sharing calorie information with its customers without them having to look up the information online.
