Two wins over the weekend gave the university’s baseball team its first series win of the season as the Frogs recorded back-to-back shutouts against the Jacksonville Dolphins.
It was the first time since May 20-21, 2010, against Cal State Bakersfield that the Frogs earned back-to-back shutouts.
The two games in Florida saw many firsts for the season from both new players and returners.
Sophomore Jerrick Suiter made his career start as catcher in Saturday’s game, and sophomore center fielder Cody Jones had TCU’s first stolen base of the season.
Right fielder Dylan Fitzgerald hit the university’s first triple of the season in the second. He and freshman Boomer White had their first multi-hit games of their careers.
White, who got the start as designated hitter, hit his first career home run in the fourth. It was the second home run of the season. In the sixth inning, senior third baseman Jantzen Witte had his first career grand slam. It was the first grand slam since Brance Rivera hit one against Dayton last season on June 2.
The defense turned a season-high three double plays.
White got the first defensive start of his career when he started in left field in Sunday’s game.
Junior catcher Kyle Bacak got his first career RBI as a Frog with a single in the second. Jones hit his first career home run, scoring three runs in that inning, as well.
Later in the same inning, Witte hit his third home run of the season, which is a team-high for the season. This was the second straight day for him to earn a home run. Witte had his third career four-RBI game.
Keaton Jones extended his hitting streak to three games with two hits Sunday, and Bacak had his first career multi-hit game.
Alex Young got his first career win while Tejay Antone made his collegiate debut in the seventh. TCU has not allowed a run in the last 23 1/3 innings pitched.
White was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week Monday after his performance at Jacksonville. He hit .625, going 5-for-8 with four runs scored. He also had a 1.375 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .667.
The Frogs will return to Lupton Stadium Tuesday to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Golden Lions have a 2-9 record overall on the season and are coming off a 11-8 loss against Southern University.
TCU enters the game with a 3-7 record. The first pitch is set for 6:30 Tuesday night.
