Chancellor to hold town hall meeting

Despite there being no changes in faculty and staff benefits, Chancellor Victor Boschini is expected to address talk of benefit reductions at a town hall meeting Tuesday.

While there has been a lot of talk about reducing faculty and staff benefits, there has yet to be any changes in benefits, Boschini said.

“I think we should have a discussion on our resources at TCU, and I think we should be good stewards of all our resources. I feel that we owe that to our students,” Boschini said. “We’re looking for ways all over campus so that we can save money. I think we should talk about every part of our expenditures, and one of them is salary and benefits.”

Even though the chancellor previously stated in his fall speech that he wanted to have a yearlong discussion on benefits and did not discuss any changes, faculty and staff still have their concerns.

During the Faculty Assembly on March 19, one faculty member asked Boschini if there were any forecasted benefits cuts built into the budget and if the Board of Trustees is putting pressure on him in meetings to think about reducing faculty and staff benefits.

Boschini said there were not any plans to reduce employee benefits because of the budget. He also said there was more pressure to hold down cuts as much as possible, according to the Faculty Assembly minutes.

Last year, Boschini held a town hall meeting for students regarding the tuition increase. Despite the popularity of the issue, only two students showed up, he said.

“Town hall meetings are a good way to get the word out on any issue,” Boschini said. “It’s my way of saying, 'I don’t know how else I can get out to everybody by saying come ask me any question you want.'”

The town hall meeting for faculty and staff will take place at 3:30 p.m. in the Brown-Lupton University Union Auditorium.
