Junior Monica Alvarado has been selected to the Mexican National Team roster and will travel to Germany with the squad for the FIFA Women's World Cup.
"We are excited for this opportunity that Monica has gotten to be a part of the Women's World Cup," TCU head coach Dan Abdalla said. "The chance to play on that stage at the international level will be an unbelievable experience for her and we are excited to have her in our program."
The midfielder from Southlake, Texas, has been training with the team in Mexico City and Cancun for the past few weeks as the team prepared to make its final roster cuts. She was notified this week that she would be a part of the squad that will travel to Germany.
Mexico is slated to play in Group B in the first stage of the tournament, opening against England on June 27, followed by Japan on July 1 and New Zealand on July 5. Prior to Germany 2011, Mexico's only previous appearance at a FIFA Women's World Cup came at USA 1999.
Alvarado was on the roster for all of the qualifying rounds to the World Cup, including Mexico's 2-1 win over the United States in the semifinals of the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying in November.
Alvarado transferred to TCU this summer and will join the squad in August after playing her first two seasons at Mississippi State University. She logged 1,330 minutes for the Bulldogs last season, notching one assist from her position in the midfield. Through her first two seasons wearing the Maroon and White and playing in the challenging Southeastern Conference, she has scored seven points on two goals and tallied a trio of assists.
Prior to her college career, Alvarado competed for Mexico's Under-17 National Team that completed in the 2008 CONCACAF U17 World Cup qualifier in Trinidad & Tobago.
Alvarado is one of two active players on the Frogs' roster to train with the Mexican National Team, joining senior midfielder Kaylie Garcia. Garcia trained and competed with Mexico in 2009-10.
The FIFA Women's World Cup will be played June 26-July 17.
