Frogs still aiming to improve after blowout win
TCU fans may be excited that the Horned Frogs were able to get the win over SMU on Saturday, but head coach Gary Patterson was not so impressed.
“Bottom line is we won, but we could have played a lot better,” Patterson said Sunday.
Patterson said he always has that mindset, but said his team had a number of miscues in all three phases of the game. He spoke specifically about the offense and how it could improve.
“We’ve got to do a better job at quarterback of setting our feet. We’re not setting our feet the way we need to,” he said. “We’ve got to catch balls. When the ball’s in the air, it’s got to be ours. Running back-wise, you can’t put the ball on the ground. Offensive line, we’ve got to fight. Every week, they’re just going to keep getting better.”
The coach went into greater depth about the play of quarterback Trevone Boykin, saying that there were plays where SMU’s defense had left receivers open and the quarterback failed to get them the ball.
“That’s what good quarterbacks do,” he said. “When you get the opportunity and they make a mistake, you’ve got to capitalize on it, because good defenses don’t make very many mistakes.”
TCU will face a very good defense in No. 11 Oklahoma this Saturday. The Sooners are undefeated and coming off a 35-21 win over Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. Patterson said the Oklahoma defense, in its second year under coordinator Mike Stoops, is much improved from 2012.
“They’re back to the kind of defense that I’ve watched them play through the years,” Patterson said. “Last year was not indicative of a normal Oklahoma defense.”
The Frogs’ offense will have to continue to improve if they hope to get a win in Norman this week. One thing that could help them do that is to run the ball more with running backs B.J. Catalon, Waymon James and Aaron Green, something Patterson said he is open to doing.
“We work on it, but we haven’t done it,” he said, “is to get underneath the center and go downhill at people.”
TCU plays Oklahoma at 6 p.m. this Saturday on Fox.
