Whitney Gipson has been making headlines since her first year as a Horned Frog. Although Gipson’s collegiate career is coming to a close, the sprinter and long jumper plans to pursue a professional career after graduation. The track & field star will begin a new chapter in her life as she competes to become an Olympic athlete.

The track and field team is ready to compete at the Penn Relays in its final meet before the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Championships. More than 1,000 teams would compete at the three-day meet at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. The Penn Relays are known as the oldest and largest track & field competition in the nation.

Reality has yet to set in for the NCAA women’s long jump champion, Whitney Gipson. “This weekend was crazy,” she said. “I’m still not over it yet.” When Gipson jumped 22-8 feet to bring home the gold medal, she shattered the records for TCU, the Mountain West and the NCAA Indoor Championships.

After claiming seven individual conference titles and a team crown at the 2012 Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships last weekend, the TCU track & field program was honored with the announcement of 22 student-athletes listed on the league’s men’s and women’s All-Mountain West Conference Indoor teams.

For the last time in program history, the TCU track & field team will be competing in the Mountain West Indoor Championships. The team will be traveling to Albuquerque, N.M. where the 60-degree, 200-meter state of the art track is located. The facilities have received high reviews from athletes, coaches and fans, according to the University of New Mexico website.

The track & field team will compete with a sense of purpose Saturday at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, head track & field coach Darryl Anderson said. “One thing we would like to see is better performance all the way across the board, more confidence and a sense of purpose in their competing,” Anderson said.

Four new signees joined the TCU track & field team as the program prepares for Big 12 competition, head track & field coach Darryl Anderson said. Ronnie Baker, from Louisville, Ky., and Harvey McSwain II, from Shelby, N.C., were two additions to the team that would keep the sprinting events strong, Anderson said.

TCU track & field will jump start its season at the Razorback Invitational this weekend in Fayetteville, Ark. against tough national competition. TCU will be one of 14 teams competing at the meet.

For junior sprinter Charles Silmon, the 2011 season did not live up to his expectations. This season, however, will be different. Silmon, a member of  the track and field team has to be a better leader, head coach Darryl Anderson said.

The TCU Track & Field team has high aspirations for 2012. “We want to be in the top 20 nationally,” TCU Track & Field head coach Darryl Anderson said. At the 2011 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, the university’s women’s team finished thirteenth. However, the men’s team did not finish in the top 20 at the NCAA Championships.
