TCU women’s tennis captured the 2012 Mountain West Conference Tournament title in San Diego, 4-2, against the San Diego State Aztecs.

For the first time since 2008, the women’s tennis team is the regular season Mountain West Conference Champion. It is the third time in seven years the team has earned the title.  The regular season crown gives the 38th-ranked Horned Frogs a first round bye in the championship this weekend.

The women’s tennis team has the chance to clinch the Mountain West championship title if the team wins its match against New Mexico (8-10 overall, 1-5 Mountain West) Saturday. Head coach Dave Borelli said he was confident about the team’s chances because the whole team was healthy for the first time this semester.

The No. 45 women’s tennis team shut out crosstown rival SMU 7-0 Wednesday night for the first time in the last four meetings between the two teams at Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. TCU earned its third-straight win after defeating conference foes Air Force and Boise State last weekend.

Although No. 14 Alabama is favored in this weekend’s match, the women’s tennis team was up for the challenge, head coach Dave Borelli said. “It will be a challenge for us, but I really like the challenge,” Borelli said. “And if we’re healthy, we’re a team they’re really going to fear playing.”
