College students seem to have a reliance on caffeine to get them through lectures and late night study sessions, but there are healthier alternatives to power through the day.

Students to receive 100 additional prints per semester

In response to student email requests to the Student Government Associaton, the university will now offer an additional 100 prints for every student.

Beginning in the fall, students will now have 300 total prints to use on campus each semester.

“In the past, most people haven’t had much success with getting [more] free prints,” Vice President of External Affairs Maddie Reddick said. “But I thought there would be no harm in trying since it was something students wanted and needed.”

Bryan Lucas, TCU’s chief technology officer, recommended Reddick to look into print policies at other universities. She began with other Big 12 schools and peer universities.

“We were about middle of the road when looking at those institutions,” Reddick said. “About half did something we thought was better and about half didn’t.”

Baylor University gives each student $28 of printing credit per semester, which is good for 800 two-sided prints. Duke University gives a $32 printing credit each semester with two-sided prints costing 2 cents per page. Other universities, like Iowa State and Southeastern Louisiana University, give prints based on major or credit hours being taken by a particular student.

“We thought about giving extra prints to nursing or business students,” Reddick said. “Being the small campus that we are and the software we have, it made more sense to apply an increase to everyone.”

After submitting a proposal to the administration, it was decided that 100 additional prints would be added for each student beginning in the fall of 2015. This change will not affect the price of prints over 300. Color prints are also not affected.

“I would say this increase puts us on par with everyone else,” Reddick said. “More toward the top, instead of in the middle.”
