UCC Fall Kickoff combines faith, live music, food

Muggy weather didn’t stop University Christian Church’s Fall Kickoff event on Sunday that showcased clubs and activities planned for the upcoming year.

The event was originally going to be outside but sporadic showers pushed the live band and booths inside.

Tables were set up in the main corridor of the church with giveaways and information on what the church had to offer. Each club focused on certain groups of churchgoers such as children, women and teens.

The food trucks were the only attraction located outside and families gathered to grab some dinner. Lines stayed steady all night for Gepetto’s Pizza Truck, McAllister’s Deli and LuLu’s Icebox.

Father and UCC church member Jeff Watts waited for Gepetto’s Pizza with his kids the night before school began. Whitney Watts is entering kindergarten at Tanglewood Elementary School along with her brother Davis and sister Emory.

Watts, a 1995 TCU graduate, said he and his wife felt a sense of jubilation knowing all of their children are entering school together.

“I’m excited for the next stage in my family’s lives,” he said.

Rob Baird, an area musician who graduated from TCU, performed with his band and gave some words of wisdom to the youngsters headed off to school.

“Find your dream and make it happen,” he said. “It sounds cheesy but the world needs more people with dreams. It can make the world a better place.”
