Panthers run rule Texans

It is 9-0 with the Paschal Panthers up in the bottom of the fifth. Drake Camilleri hits his third single of the night to knock in the game-winning run.

Camilleri started the game with a single and ended it with one.

The Paschal Panthers’ baseball team run ruled Arlington's Sam Houston in five innings Tuesday night.

If a team is losing by more than ten runs in the fifth inning or the tenth run scores in the bottom of the fifth, the game is called due to a run rule, according the University Interscholastic League Baseball Manual.

The Panthers’ offense came out strong. Camilleri started the offensive roll with a single to left field. Alex Zamaripa would knock him later that inning with a single.

In the next inning, the Panthers scored three runs, widening their lead to 4-0. The Sam Houston starter walked in the first run of the inning. Hunter Nurdin hit a single to left-center field to score the other two runs of the inning.

The Panthers’ bats would go dormant in the third inning. The inning ended early with a Patrick Studey runner’s interference. Panther’s catcher Austin Cornish hit a ground ball to the Texan’s shortstop, who then tossed it to the second baseman. Studey slid into the second baseman hard enough keeping him from throwing out the runner at first to turn the double play. The umpire called Studey for the interference, which meant both runners were out.

Ben Noel would lead off the fourth inning by reaching first on an error by the Texan’s second baseman. He would score on Camilleri’s second single of the night after a Reid McDonald strikeout. Camilleri would cross the plate after a Sam Pfrang single to left field.

The Panther’s offense would keep the pressure on the Texans in the fifth by adding the last four runs of the game. Camilleri’s game-winning hit bounced off of the rubber on the mound, allowing McDonald to cross the plate.

The 10-0 win came off of strong pitching performances from Beau Campbell and Austin Perryman. Campbell started the game, striking out six and giving up two hits in three innings.

Perryman came into the game in the fourth inning striking out four and forcing two pop flies.

The Panther baseball team will take the field Thursday night at Arlington Heights Classic against Arlington Heights at 7 p.m. The team will play a doubleheader Friday starting at 3 p.m. and play Lewisville Saturday at 10 a.m.
