Beth-El Congregation plans ice cream social, movie event

Daytimers will host its annual ice cream social and show the movie Bernie, a comedy starring Jack Black, starting at noon on July 9.

Daytimers, is a program that hosts activities for adults in the Beth-El Congregation, located at 4900 Briarhaven Road in the 109. The event, which is open to the public, costs $5 per person for ice cream, cookies, iced tea and hot coffee.

Beth-El, a Reform Jewish synagogue, hosts many social activities, religious as well as non-religious, to bring the Jewish community together.

Reform Judaism emphasizes the importance of being innovative while preserving traditions, said Ilana Knust, education director of Beth-El Congregation. They also believe in embracing diversity.

Rabbi Ralph Mecklenburger said the Jewish community, nationally and locally, sponsors social events to try to interest more people in attending and in joining the congregation.

“We do various social things. We have a senior’s group and two youth groups, so people can get together and know one another,” he said. “In America, we are a minority, so all the more reason why we need to get people together.”

Mecklenburger said the congregation is not just a place of prayer and worship; it also serves as a community.

The congregation is based in an exquisite building filled with paintings that include religious icons seen throughout the synagogue, said Louise Appleman, the congregation’s past president.

Beth-El Congregation is proud of its architecture, whether it is the spacious worship halls that house the Torah scrolls or the event halls that are reserved for wedding and baby-naming ceremonies, she said.

For reservations to Daytimers’ ice cream social and movie, call Larry Steckler at 817-927-2736 or Hugh Lamensdorf at 817-738-1428. Reservations can also be made online at www.bethelfw.org.

“We will have standard and exotic flavors. We will have no sugar added. We will have high-fat, low-fat and if it exists, no-fat varieties,” a Daytimers flyer reads. “When you make your reservations, let us know if you are looking for something special.”
