Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts literary celebration gets wardrobe twist

Literary Character Day got a wardrobe change at the Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts this year.

The words “life imitates art far more than art imitates life,” by Irish author and playwright Oscar Wilde, took on modern meaning Friday as FWAFA students in grades three through 12 dressed as their favorite pieces of art for the first time during the celebration.

Craig Shreckengast, high school principal, even dressed in his Charlotte’s Web costume for morning announcements.

“Enjoying the fine arts and being able to do fun events like this is what I enjoy most about this school,” said sophomore Arthur Munoz.

Stephen Madrid, director of fine arts, said there is never a dull moment at the academy.

“It’s a place that is full of creativity,” he said. “That makes it fun and different every day.”

Gail Hartsfield, a former student who is now student services director and in her ninth year at the school, said she loves the fine arts and the chance to work with students in grades three through 12.

“You have 500 kids who are all here because they love the arts and are creative,” said Laura Kinkade, marketing director and mother of two FWAFA students. “It’s a different environment. You feel it.”
