City Council approves new baseball academy

A new baseball facility was among the many topics discussed at this month’s final City Council meeting.
The meeting was held on Tuesday, May 19th at 7:00 p.m. in City Hall.
Among the items on the agenda was a proposal to fund a new baseball academy.
According to the City Council agenda, Pop’s Baseball Academy will open at an existing property on 3701 Cockrell Avenue. The property is situated along Granbury Road near South University Drive.
The property owner plans to invest an estimated $496,149 to re-develop an existing 1,800 square foot building. This would add an additional 15,000 square feet to build the academy with an outdoor baseball diamond.
Ann Zedeh represents district nine, where the academy will be built. “We are really excited,” Zedeh said. “The project will be helping kids who otherwise wouldn’t get the chance to play baseball.”
According to the project proposal, the value of the project after construction is estimated at $4,242 per year for a total of $21,210 over a five-year period. However, this could change upon the review of the Texas Appraisal District.
Along with approving the baseball facility, the council recognized several groups in attendance.
Mayor Betsy Price congratulated the members of council who were re-elected. This included the representatives from all districts except for district four. The current representative, Daniel Scarth lost the re-election to Carly Moon by a vote of 1, 520 to 2,266.
“I am excited to continue working with all of you,” said Price. “Danny you and your expertise will surely be missed.”
The council then recognized three Fort Worth schools on receiving the National Excellence in Urban Education Award. According to the organization’s website, the award is presented annually to the nation’s highest performing urban schools.
City council also designated titles to certain days for the month of May. The council approved a proclamation to name May 18th-23rd as “Emergency Medical Service Week” to honor those serving in emergency response fields.
Additionally, they named May 2015 “Motorcycle Awareness Month.” Members of various motorcycle organizations in Fort Worth were present to thank the council for their efforts to keep motorcycle drivers safe.
The next council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 2nd. All meetings are open to the public. They are conducted three times a month at 7:00 p.m. Tuesdays in the Council Chamber at City Hall, 1000 Throckmorton Street.
