Boykin news dominates TCU offensive press conference

TCU offensive leaders face the media at the Valero Alamo Bowl on Thursday, Dec 31, 2015.

Even though quarterback Trevone Boykin wasn’t at the podium for TCU’s offensive press conference at the Valero Alamo Bowl on Thursday, his name dominated the conversation.

Boykin’s arrest on charges of assaulting a public officer, public intoxication, and resisting arrest was the focal point on Thursday, although Horned Frog co-offensive coordinator Doug Meacham opened the session by asking reporters to focus on on-the-field issues.

“I’d like to start off that we’d like to keep all the questioning on the field, things that matter from here forward,” Meacham said. “Kind of refer anything other than that to Coach P when he has his press conference.”

Boykin was suspended by Patterson this morning, leaving the Frogs with a hole at the quarterback position.

Meacham said that while they haven’t made a definite decision, the TCU coaching staff is leaning towards starting senior Bram Kohlhausen in Boykin’s place.

“Foster Sawyer is a candidate and also Bram Kohlhausen,” Meacham said. “So those guys. Probably leaning towards Bram at this point.”

Meacham confirmed rumors that had been swirling throughout the day that Boykin was in his hotel room during curfew checks.

Co-offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie said that the incident was “out of character.”

“Trevone means a lot to me and my family,” Cumbie said. “He’s a great kid and we love him dearly.”

Seniors Aaron Green, Halapoulivaati Vaitai and Kolby Listenbee said that while losing Boykin hurts, they remained confident in their ability to outplay Oregon on Saturday.

“We went up to Norman [Oklahoma] without Josh [Doctson], without Tre,” Green said. “We should have won that game. I mean, hopefully the outcome is different. Like I said, we’re coming to win.

“I feel like we always play our best games when our backs are against the wall,” Green said. “Me personally, I love when people count us out, when they count me out personally. I feel like that’s when I play my best ball. Go ahead, count me out.”

Vaitai, a mainstay at tackle for the Frogs, said that regardless of who stands in the pocket, he’s prepared to play the game of his life.

“My job is to protect the quarterback,” Vaitai said. “If Tre is not there, I’m going to protect somebody else. It’s my job. But this is my last game. I have to give the seniors the best last game.”

Listenbee said that he hasn’t paid much attention to people saying that Oregon would come into the game as a heavy favorite.

“I feel like we’re all about shocking the world, really,” Listenbee said. “Our motto this year was ‘prove them right.’ I think for this game, it’s ‘prove them wrong.'”

Listenbee, a wide receiver who stepped into the primary target role after Josh Doctson was lost for the season with an injury, said that there won’t be a noticeable adjustment from Boykin to Kohlhausen or Sawyer.

“Foster can throw the hardball, Bram can made great decisions,” Listenbee said. “The receivers’ job is to make them confident in us, catch the balls you need to catch and make plays if you need to.”

Asked if he felt disappointed that Boykin wouldn’t be able to throw him passes in his final game, Listenbee said that he hadn’t thought about it.

“It would be cool to have him there because I’ve been playing with him the last four years,” Listenbee said. “But the two other quarterbacks I’ve been practicing with the last couple years. I’m used to them, too.”

Meacham ended the press conference on an exasperated note after a question on whether Boykin would stay in San Antonio with the team.

“I mean, what difference does it make?” Meacham asked. “How many times are we going to talk about it?”
