Four student poets and one national poet shared their poetry with students Tuesday night to raise awareness for the V-Day campaign.

The V-Day campaign’s goal is to raise awareness about gender-based violence and raise money for the Women’s Center of Tarrant County.

The poetry slam brought about 20 students to the campus commons where the five poets competed for a gift card prize.

Evan Woods, a first-year student and theatre major, won first place in the poetry slam.

Woods said that he is “in favor” for what the V-Day campaign stands for.

Chris Bradford is the winner of the 2016 Forth Worth National Poetry Slam Championship.

Bradford performed two poems and he was well received by the audience.

“Poetry is more of an expressionist type thing where people can understand because they are listening to what you are saying,” Bradford said.

Brittny Mahan, a senior theatre design major, is the artistic director for V-Day.

“I was very happy with the turnout today,” Mahan said. “The audience was consistent and strong.”

Madison Calhoun is the Executive Director for the V-Week campaign and oversees the financial operations of the campaign.

Calhoun said this cause is close to her heart because she experienced violence in her own life and has seen it affect lives around her.

V-Week has events each day that all lead to their main event “The Vagina Monologues”.
