Housing and Residence Life is hosting TCU’s first Human Library event at the Mary Couts Burnett Library this Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Students are invited to walk in and “check out” one of 25 human books for a 20-minute session. Human books are people who have volunteered to share stories about their experiences or backgrounds.

“Often times we go through life with people without ever truly knowing them or the stories they hold dear,” said Imani Wimberly, who serves on the Housing and Residence Life Inclusiveness committee. “This is an opportunity for people to hear just how different, amazing, strong, and endearing we all are.”

The Human Library started in Copenhagen in 2000 as a project. Wimberly said he had seen it held at one of his previous institutions and knew that with the relational model here at TCU, it would be a perfect fit for the campus.

Students are encouraged to register for the event to reserve certain “books” for a specific time slot. However, there will be “books” open for walk-ins all day throughout the event

While event is hosted by the Housing and Residence Life, the committee that planned this event consists of Hall Directors Peyton Lipscomb and Imani Wimberly, and students Michelle Nguyen and Kalena Chiu.

Correction: A previous version of this story misidentified Imani Wimberly, who is a residence hall director and member of the Housing and Residence Life Inclusiveness committee.
