Polo club riding high on success

TCU Polo club will soon be recognized for not only what they’ve been doing on the field but what they’ve been doing off the field as well.

The United States Polo Association has tabbed the Horned Frogs as one of the most organized and well-run clubs in the nation and will be featuring the team in their College Polo 101 guidebook next season.

“We are very excited and honored to serve as an example for other polo clubs,” said club president Katherine Phillips, a senior political science and communication double major.

Phillips said the clubs continues to run well each year even though most of its members have no prior experience to the game of polo.

“Every year we get better,” said Phillips. “As you lose players and people graduate, it kind of ups and flows but usually we’ll always make it to the preliminary tournament and the goal is to make it to the regional tournament.”

At the Preliminary tournament this year, the club beat Texas Tech by a score of 11-3 but ended up losing to the regional champions Texas A&M.

“I’m extremely proud of how our team played this season,” said Phillips. “For a group of people who had never played the sport before coming to TCU, everyone showed so much improvement throughout the year and we absolutely held our own at the regional level.”

Vice-president Paige Browning said club does it best each year to grow their brand and become more known both locally and nationally.

“I’d say TCU polo is known pretty well throughout our division,” said the sophomore. “We’ve had a pretty strong team for the past few years. So it’s nice to show up to tournaments and everyone knows who we are and they’re expecting us.”

Browning said she knows from experience that the club has become a great alternative to riders who just want to enjoy polo and do not want to make it a full-time investment.

“I was gonna ride for TCU on their NCAA team,” said Browning. “But I just didn’t want it to be as of a job. I love having a passion for riding and wanting to do it for fun.”

The Club practices and has its home game about an hour from campus at Presetonwood Polo & Country Club in Oak Point, Texas.

For more information on how to join the TCU Polo club, you can reach them on their Facebook page or sign up at the next activity fair held by TCU at the beginning of each semester.
