Frogs earn first victory against SMU since 2012

The Horned Frogs began their final weekend of non-conference action in style, beating the SMU Mustangs behind a complete team effort in four sets (25-23, 21-25, 25-22, 25-22) inside SMU’s Moody Coliseum Friday.

The two teams battled in each set, and the Frogs proved to have the power to close out each set and take the match victory. On the night, the Frogs earned 64 kills and a season-high 76 total team digs.

“Tonight we did a good job of executing our game plan for a longer period of time,” head coach Jill Kramer said.

The Frogs started out a bit sluggish in the first set and were trailing almost the entire set. Strong serving by junior middle blocker Anna Walsh pushed the Frogs over the edge and gave them the victory in the first set. SMU came storming back in the second set and tied the match going into the intermission break. The Frogs captured momentum in the final two sets to seal the victory.

Junior outside hitter Ashleigh Martin led the Horned Frogs offensively for the second straight match, earning a double-double with a season-high 18 kills and 11 digs. This match marked the fifth time this season where Martin led the Frogs in kills and her sixth straight match with double digit kills. Three other Frogs earned double-digit kills on the night- Walsh earned a season-high 14, and freshmen Sarah Swanson and Allye Beth Deaton chipped in 11 each.

“Serving-wise, we missed quite a few serves for us, but I do think we made up for it in some other ways and that was helpful,” Kramer said. “Overall, it was a great team effort.”

With the win, the Frogs moved to 7-3 on the season. The win marked TCU’s sixth all-time victory against the Mustangs, their first win against SMU since 2012, and the Frogs’ first win in Dallas since 2011. Jill Kramer defeated SMU for the first time in her career.

The Frogs will finish the weekend Saturday against Sam Houston State at SMU’s Moody Coliseum at 1:00 p.m.
