Horned Frogs walk-off in 13-inning thriller

Sophomore catcher Zach Humphreys launched a bases-loaded two-out single in the 13th inning Sunday morning to secure a 5-4 victory over Minnesota.

The first head of Sunday’s doubleheader was a continuation of Saturday’s suspended contest, nothing new for this season’s squad. TCU has had six games either postponed or suspended in the young season.

The rain hit Lupton Stadium in the third inning.

The Horned Frogs got out of the gates quickly, scoring three runs in the first inning. Right fielder Connor Wanhanen opened the first inning with a base hit and traveled to second base on Humphrey’s hit. Wanhanen scored on a single from left fielder Josh Watson to right field. Humphreys was able to score from first with Watson caught in a rundown and ultimately slid safely into second base. Watson scored from second base on a two-out single from center fielder A.J. Balta to extend the lead to 3-0.

Watson earned his fourth multi-RBI game of the season and the 27th of his career.

The Frogs added another run in the second inning on a triple from Coby Boulware to make it a 4-0 game. Boulware scored on a throwing error. The first-year second baseman earned his fifth career multi-hit game.

Before the rain, sophomore pitcher Nick Lodolo earned five strikeouts in two-and-two-thirds innings pitched.

Minnesota started to mount a comeback in the fifth inning early Sunday morning. Shortstop Terrin Vavra knocked in two runners from second and third base to cut the deficit to two runs.

The Golden Gophers added a third run in the sixth inning off a two-out single from Luke Pettersen and tied the game in the eighth inning. Vavra scored a run on a two-out single.

Minnesota had plenty of chances to end the game in extra innings, stranding five runners on the bases. Sophomore pitcher Trey Morris prevented anything to amount from the scare.

TCU loaded the bases with a trio of walks in the bottom of the 13th inning and Humphreys ripped a single into center field to win the game.

TCU shut-out in second head of doubleheader

TCU was unable to continue the momentum from Sunday’s earlier contest and fell 8-0 to the Golden Gophers, surrendering the weekend series.

The Horned Frogs registered only five hits on the afternoon.

Pitcher Sean Wymer took the loss after surrendering six runs on eight hits in five-and-two-thirds innings of work.

Luken Baker and Watson singled in the fourth and seventh innings respectively but were stranded on double play balls to end the inning.

The Golden Gophers scored runs in four different innings, opening the scoring in the fourth inning on a single from catcher Cole McDevitt and a throwing error in the fifth surrendered two runs to extend the lead to five.

Minnesota took advantage of many mental errors by the Horned Frogs as a tw0-out error in the sixth inning surrendered two additional runs. A home run and a bases-loaded walk accounted for the final two runs to extend the Minnesota lead to 8-0.

With the loss, TCU drops to 10-7 on the year. The Frogs will return to Lupton Stadium Tuesday night as they host Arkansas-Pine Bluff. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30.
