The 90th annual Oscars will be taking place this Sunday at 7 p.m. The show will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and is likely to be filled with poorly timed jokes and another wisecrack about how Meryl Streep is always nominated for prestigious awards. (Idea: Maybe we don’t want to hear that joke for the one-hundredth time?) But we do want to hear about what films will take home the biggest awards of the night.
Below are the nominations and my predictions.
BEST PICTURE
- “Call Me By Your Name”
- “Darkest Hour”
- “Dunkirk”
- “Get Out”
- “Lady Bird”
- “Phantom Thread”
- “The Post”
- “The Shape of Water”
- “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
Will win: “Three Billboards.” This film has been winning a ton of the major awards coming into the Oscars so it hard not seeing win Best Picture for this years Oscars.
Should win: “Call Me by Your Name.” This is my favorite Oscar movie this year and has some of the best acting in any of the nominated films, especially Michael Stuhlbarg’s and Timothée Chalamet’s riveting performances.

- Paul Thomas Anderson, “Phantom Thread”
- Greta Gerwig, “Lady Bird”
- Christopher Nolan, “Dunkirk”
- Jordan Peele, “Get Out”
- Guillermo del Toro, “The Shape of Water”
Will win: Guillermo del Toro. If anyone makes a movie about a romance between a fish and a woman, then it is bound to be an Oscar frontrunner. After winning a few awards leading up to the Oscars, look to del Toro to win the award.
Should win: Guillermo del Toro.

- Timothée Chalamet, “Call Me By Your Name”
- Daniel Day-Lewis, “Phantom Thread”
- Daniel Kaluuya, “Get Out”
- Gary Oldman, “Darkest Hour”
- Denzel Washington, “Roman J. Israel, Esq.”
Will win: Gary Oldman. This performance of Gary Oldman yelling in a fat suit is all anyone is talking about. With all this hype going into the award I’m sure he will take it home.
Should win: Timothée Chalamet. This performance is almost the opposite of Gary Oldman, meaning it is much more subtle. I would love for him to win, but Gary Oldman is the clear frontrunner for this.
ACTRESS
- Sally Hawkins, “The Shape of Water”
- Frances McDormand, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
- Margot Robbie, “I, Tonya”
- Saoirse Ronan, “Lady Bird”
- Meryl Streep, “The Post”
Will win: Frances McDormand. She’s another clear frontrunner and has won the majority of the awards going into the Oscars and deservingly so. Look to her to win this award with her only competition being Sally Hawkins.
Should win: Frances McDormand.
Animated Feature Film
- “Boss Baby”
- “The Breadwinner”
- “Coco”
- “Ferdinand”
- “Loving Vincent”
Will win: “Coco.” No surprise here as this film is the only one on the list made by Pixar and this category is basically best Disney/Pixar movie of the year. Granted, this is a great movie but there are others not even on the list that should have been nominated.
Should win: “Coco.”
