McCall’s return not enough for volleyball, swept by OU in Big 12 opener

Despite the return of preseason First Team All-American élan McCall, TCU volleyball was swept at Oklahoma Wednesday in their first conference match of the season.

This was the third-straight match that the Frogs have been swept in. They have not won since Sept. 15 when they defeated Auburn 3-2.

McCall saw limited time in her first match of the season due to a leg injury.  The outside hitter recorded nine digs playing on the back row for TCU.

The Frogs recorded just 31 kills in the match, with outside hitter Audrey Nalls and middle blocker Katie Clark contributing eight apiece.

Nalls added 10 digs, making the contest her fourth double-digit dig match of the season.

TCU conceded a couple of mistakes early that handed Oklahoma an early advantage of 8-3. The Frogs responded and brought the score differential to just one point, but it was not enough to prevent the Sooners from claiming the first set 25-17.

As for the second set, Oklahoma’s wall kept a tight defense, making it difficult for TCU. Regardless of just being down one (13-14) midway through, the Sooners took another 25-17 win after getting the last points in the dying minutes.

Despite their deficit, TCU showed courage during the third set by going on a 6-1 run to tie the game at 18. Still, the Frogs suffered defeat as Oklahoma stepped up late to win 25-23.

The loss drops the Frogs to a 5-6 record on the season and 0-1 in conference play.

Libero Berklie Baker had tallied 11 digs for TCU in the match.

“We were a little too juiced at the beginning of set one, which led to some early unforced errors,” head coach Jill Kramer said.  “I never felt like we really got settled in and competed until late in the third set.”

Amidst the loss, the fifth-year head coach noted some positive aspects of her team.

“Tonight was one of our better serving performances, and we put pressure on OU from the serving line, which was good to see,” Kramer said.  “That is something we can build on going into the match against KSU on Saturday.”

TCU will host Kansas State this Saturday in their first Big 12 home game in this season.  First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
