Women’s soccer begins MWC tournament today

The TCU women’s soccer team will take on the University of Wyoming today in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Championship.

The No. 6 seeded Horned Frogs will play the No. 3 Wyoming Cowgirls in the opening round of the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. CST.

TCU came into the conference tournament looking to advance to the championship round of play for the very first time in program history. The Horned Frogs have gone 1-4-0 in conference tournament action, falling to UNLV, BYU and twice to Utah in the past several years.

Wyoming grabbed the No. 3 seed in the Mountain West Championship with a 5-1 victory over Air Force to close the regular season. They had a 10-5-4 overall record and went 3-1-2 in conference play.

The Cowgirls hold a 7-2-1 record against TCU. The two teams have met before at TCU’s Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium, with Wyoming claiming a 3-1 victory over the Frogs earlier this season.

TCU women’s soccer has packed the house this year, finishing second in the Mountain West in attendance with a total of 15,583 fans turning out for the nine home games in 2011.

Sophomore defender Brooke Kviz kicked TCU’s only goal in the final regular season home game, played against Wyoming. Senior forward Jordan Calhoun tied for third in the Mountain West with three game-winning goals.
