The driver involved in a single car crash on University Drive Friday evening was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, according to the police report.
According to the police report, Catherine Ratelle, 21 of Dallas, told police she had been texting while driving, lost control of the car and struck a tree.
“If she’d hit any tree besides that one she would have most likely been dead or more seriously injured,” Chris Gonzalez, junior criminal justice major said.
Ratelle had a blood alcohol content of .15 according to the report. The legal blood alcohol level while driving is .08 in Texas.
The red Jeep Liberty flipped and came to rest on its side. Officers were in the area working and responded quickly.
Ratelle posted a $2,500 bail bond and was released on Jan. 28, according to Mansfield Jail.
Ratelle is still active at TCU, Suzanne Weldon in student records said.
The stump of the stricken tree can be seen near the main University Drive crosswalk.
