Senior forward Craig Williams scored a team-high 13 points with 5-of-9 shooting and added seven rebounds as the TCU men’s basketball team (13-8 overall, 3-3 Mountain West Conference) beat Wyoming 58-52 Wednesday night at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.

With TCU holding onto a 50-47 lead with 5:10 left in the game, Williams delivered the dagger, knocking down a 3-pointer to give the Frogs a six-point advantage and a lead Wyoming could not recover.

Williams’ big 3-pointer did not come as a surprise to TCU head coach Jim Christian, who said Williams, a transfer from Temple University, has just as much outside shooting capability as anyone else on the team — he just has not shown it yet.

“He’s got a lot of ability,” Christian said. “I’m here every day in practice watching him. If I lined them all up, he’d probably finish second or third on our team shooting 3-pointers.”

TCU found itself in a quick hole as Wyoming jumped out to a 6-0 lead within the game’s first three minutes. The Cowboys held that lead until the 13:23 mark of the first half when sophomore forward Amric Fields scored a game-tying layup. Fields then knocked down a 3-pointer on the next possession to put the Frogs up 11-8.

The two teams would exchange buckets and the lead over the next seven minutes until junior forward Garlon Green sunk a pair of free throws to put TCU up 22-20, a lead the team would not give up the rest of the half.

But Wyoming came out firing again after the break, going on a 6-0 run to take a 36-35 lead with 16:35 left.

TCU would respond with Williams making a jumper for the game’s next bucket, igniting a 14-2 run to put the Frogs up for good.

Wyoming forward Leonard Washington punished the Frogs in the post, totaling 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting and grabbing six rebounds.

Williams said TCU did all it to could to contain him.

“He’s a pretty good player,” Williams said. “We just tried to double-team him and make him feel uncomfortable because he’s a beast.”

The Frogs now move into a tie for fifth place in the Mountain West standings. Wyoming falls to 17-5 overall and 3-3 in conference action.

TCU shot 45.7 percent from the field for the game, including 12-of-21 (57.1 percent) in the first half.

Fields finished with 10 points for his second straight double-digit game.

“You have to win at home to be in this race,” Christian said. “We understand that, so it was obviously a big win. [Wyoming] has been playing well, so we knew it was going to be this kind of basketball game.”

TCU will be back in action Saturday when it travels to No. 17 San Diego State. Tipoff is set for 9 p.m. CT.
