Helping others keep their new year’s resolution inspired junior modern dance major Jana Schneider to create a new kind of fitness class she calls “Hip Hoppercise”.

Junior middle school education major Lauren Olander decided to try Hip Hoppercise after making a resolution to live a healthier lifestyle.

“Honestly, you don’t even feel like you just worked out,” Olander said. “You feel like you are just dancing and having fun.”

Schneider started Hip Hoppercise in January. She said she wanted to have a chance to volunteer and use her passion for dance.

“It’s just one of those things I just really felt called to do,” Schneider said.

Schneider said Hip Hoppercise combines her own dance moves with traditional fitness. She also teaches a self choreographed dance at the end of the class.

First year strategic communication major Anna Galvez said she continues to attend Hip Hoppercise because she found it more fun than traditional exercise.

“It was an easy way to be active without really realizing you are working out,” Galvez said. “It’s easier than just running on the treadmill for twenty minutes.”

Schneider said she continues to teach Hip Hoppercise because the people in her class inspire her to keep going.

“The girls and guys that come are such hard workers and they send out such an energy that it’s so fun doing it with them,” Schneider said.
