NCAA will not look into drug test

Results of a TCU football team drug test given Feb. 1 will not be reviewed by the National Collegiate Athletics Association, an NCAA official said Thursday.

Mary Wilfert, NCAA associate director for educational affairs, said the NCAA does not plan to look into allegations regarding the test, which, according to reports and arrest warrant affidavits, multiple players failed.

Wilfert said the results from school-administered drug tests do not have to be reported to the NCAA.

Results from tests given by the National Center for Drug Free Sport, a third-party company out of Kansas City, are the only tests given to the NCAA, Wilfert said.

Drug Free Sport tests are intended to detect performance-enhancing drugs and do not test for marijuana, Wilfert said.

Andrea Wickerham, Drug Free Sport Vice President, said the company gives tests at random, usually notifying schools no more than 24 hours in advance.

Wickerham said tests administered by Drug Free Sport are given once a year to division one football-playing schools. The tests fall under NCAA guidelines, making athletes that fail the tests subject to a one-season suspension, according the NCAA bylaws.

Four TCU players – Tanner Brock, D.J. Yendrey, Devin Johnson and Ty Horn – were among 16 university students arrested in a campus drug sweep Wednesday morning.

Each were arrested on multiple counts of marijuana delivery, ranging from misdemeanor to felony offenses, according to arrest warrants.

According to the warrant affidavits, Johnson told an undercover officer on Feb. 7 that 82 players failed the test. Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported an unnamed source said 5 student-athletes failed the team-issued drug test.

In a separate affidavit, Brock told another undercover officer that he failed the test “for sure.” Brock also told the officer he wasn’t worried about it since there would be “about 60 people being screwed” by the test, according to the affidavit.

Messages to Patterson, athletics director Chris Del Conte and Director of Athletics Media Relations Mark Cohen were not returned.
