Lady Frogs lose to Texas A&M 6-1

The women’s tennis team fell short of notching its second straight win over a ranked opponent when it lost to No. 28 Texas A&M 6-1 Monday night at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

TCU beat No. 35 Oklahoma on Feb. 19.

With the loss, the 32nd-ranked Lady Frogs fell to 4-3 on the year.

The duo of senior Gaby Mastromarino and freshman Simona Parajova beat the Aggies tandem of seniors Sheri Olivier and Lauren Santocroce 8-5 for the Lady Frogs’ lone doubles win.

Juniors Kelsey Sundaram and Federica Denti, and freshman Gaby Fernandez and sophomore Gabi Barbosa both lost 9-8 tiebreaker decisions to give Texas A&M the 2-1 advantage and the doubles point.

In singles action, Denti picked up TCU’s lone win, beating junior Janelle Cuthbertson 7-6, 3-6, 1-0.

Freshman Stefanie Tan battled junior Nazari Urbina to a third set but eventually fell short, losing 6-4, 2-6, 3-6.

TCU No. 1 junior Olivia Smith was swept 6-1, 6-2 by A&M’s junior Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar, who entered the match ranked 14th nationally.

Head coach Dave Borelli said his team could not recover after losing the doubles point.

“Losing doubles the way we did was a big letdown, to be honest with you,” Borelli said. “We just didn’t respond after that in the singles.”

Despite the tough loss, Borelli said his team still had to focus on two things: recovering from injuries and continuing to improve.

“It’s a long year,” Borelli said. “We’ve got to come back and get healthy. We need everybody healthy. Like I told the kids, I’m not one to panic. It’s a long process, and we just have to keep getting better.”

TCU will be back in action tomorrow when it hosts UT-Arlington.
