TCU students came together for an hour of mingling, music and Zumba dancing Monday night as the Sigma Lambda Alpha sorority kicked off its eventful week, La Semana.

Every year the members of SLA designate a week at the end of February and beginning of March to spread cultural awareness, SLA member Zulema Arriaga said.

“Cultural things don’t happen that much around campus so that’s something that we try to bring to campus so that other people can learn about different cultures,” she said.

Brooke McLeod, member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, said the Zumba dancing in the Brown-Lupton University Union auditorium was a fun and creative way to break out of her usual work out routine and get to know girls from other sororities as well.

“I think it’s important because we need to branch out and make new friends and not just be stuck in cliques with our own sororities,” she said.

Zumba dancing was the first of many events happening every day this week, including a piñata-making social Tuesday, Vegan Awareness Event Wednesday, a community service event Thursday and a closed SLA alumni event Friday.
