Chancellor Victor Boschini explained upcoming plans for the university Thursday, including an increase in on-campus residents, the addition of new dorms and extensive renovations to the library and other academic buildings.

Boschini, who sent out a campus-wide email Wednesday detailing the university’s “Vision for the Future,” talked for almost 45 minutes at the Faculty Senate meeting Thursday about recent recommendations sent down from the board of trustees.

Boschini said the university has a target goal of making the campus 100 percent residential for undergraduates.

Two residence halls are under construction just north of Greek housing and are scheduled to open in the fall of 2013, Boschini said. After that, the university will begin a mass renovation of the rest of Worth Hills that will include the addition of multiple dorms and a new dining hall, Boschini said.

“I think, in general, Worth Hills is going to become a really great hub for all students to live in, to eat in and to play in,” Boschini said after the meeting.

Renovation plans to the east side of campus are also in store, Boschini said.

The Harris College of Nursing & Health Sciences facilities and the library both will undergo renovations and expansions, Boschini said. Three academic buildings are planned for construction behind the current library. Boschini said the university has bought a city block north of Smith Hall to compensate for the loss of parking.

Boschini said the focus of the east campus upgrades will be creating more space for students, something that has been lacking, especially in the library.

“Our main goal in the library is to make less room for things and more room for people to work, to study and for more group interaction,” Boschini said. “Kind of make it a library of the 22nd century, not the 20th century.”
