Students at the Wesley said they found community on Wednesday nights.

Dance to benefit children’s hospital

Members of Lambda Theta Alpha sorority planned to dance the night away tonight in order to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Senior early childhood education major and fundraising chair Noemi Mejia said the dance marathon was a fun way to raise money for St. Jude.

The women want people to know that St. Jude is making a difference and saving lives by sharing treatments that work, Mejia said.

The dance marathon will be open to all TCU students, Mejia said. Participants would be eligible for gift cards or cash prizes with a $5 entry fee.

Students do not have to compete for prizes to attend, she said. Anyone who wants to watch and dance along can pay $2 at the door. Senior nursing major and community service chair Karla Rodriguez said the winner would be the last person dancing.

“Basically the participants have to be dancing the entire time or as long as they can,” Rodriguez said. “There are built in breaks, but basically, to compete, you have to dance the entire time.”

Mejia said the winner would be chosen based on who gets the most audience cheers in addition to dancing the longest. Participants should bring friends to cheer them on to increase their chance of winning.

The marathon could go as late as 2 a.m., Mejia said. Participants could leave at any time or stay all night.

There will be a mixtape with various music and students can request songs throughout the night, she said.

Timeka Gordon, director of community scholars program and Lambda Theta Alpha’s adviser, said she hoped the dance would give students a greater appreciation for Lambda Theta Alpha. The dance could also help the women in the sorority grow closer to their organization, she said.

“I think sometimes in organizations we do things and we don’t have a true understanding as to the purpose behind it and why they’re doing it,” Gordon said. “So I just want them, as members of LTA, to just gain a stronger commitment to what they stand for, what the organization stands for, and that is giving back to the community.”

Rodriguez said the dance should help establish the sorority on campus and create awareness of St. Jude.

“I don’t think we had seen something like this on campus before, and we were just trying to find a creative way to put on an event for St. Jude that would get people’s attention,” Rodriguez said.
