One of the university’s very own Horned Frogs has been not only juggling her school work but also a TV show. Freshman biology major Amber Hatley is one of the newest cast members of Style Network’s “Big Rich Texas.” After casting calls and auditions, Amber, her mother DeAynni Hatley and sister Shaye Hatley were chosen to star in “Big Rich Texas.” But how will this impact Amber’s personal life?

“I think it’s kind of hard, just because I’m pre-med, so I just have a lot of studying to do,” Amber said. “We had the premiere last Sunday, and it was hard ‘cause I had two tests.”

Amber is an active student on campus, as a member of Zeta Tau Alpha and a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. A tomboy at heart, Amber said she still loved the girly things, such as the color pin and Hello Kitty.

Even being on the show, Amber said she is just a normal kid. Her mother agreed.

“We just really feel like we’re a normal family,” DeAynni said. “We’re a little quirky, but that’s about it. We’ve had a lot of people tell us we should be on TV before because of our family dynamic.”

Being on TV will not stop the three women from going out and having a good time together. Amber said she is still getting used to the cameras following her.

“The first time I did it I was really nervous. You can see it in the first episode,” Amber said. “It’s just hard to get used to, but once you do, it’s like nothing.” 

With all of the attention came fame, but Amber said she cannot see her life changing drastically.

“I can’t imagine it changing that much,” she said. “I can’t imagine just people coming up to me [saying] ‘Can I have your autograph?’”

As hard as it was to imagine fame, one thing Amber said she knew would come with being televised was public scrutiny. Amber said a Dallas magazine has already critiqued her mom after the first episode, but Amber said she would not take it to heart.

“I guess you can say I’m a realist. Say what you want, it doesn’t really matter,” she said. “I’m not anyone I’m not, so you can’t tell me otherwise.”
