Women’s tennis team to play San Diego State

The women’s tennis team is on a three-match winning streak and will continue Mountain West action against San Diego State on Saturday.

The Lady Frogs are going into the weekend with momentum, winning their last three matches by a combined score of 20-1.

Last time on the court, TCU earned a 7-0 victory over crosstown rival SMU on Wednesday night at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

Assistant coach Jason Marshall said he credited the recent success to a change in mentality.

“We have really started taking advantage of the short shots and are stepping up in the court better,” Marshall said. “It makes the game so much easier to be up in the court and control the courts.”

Chris Perry, athletics media relations graduate assistant, said that with the Mountain West Conference Tournament less than a month away, two wins this weekend would set the team up nicely going into the conference tournament.

Sophomore Millie Nichols said, “The season is a day-by-day process. This everyday focus can wear us out mentally and physically, yet it is what is going to be the difference maker in the end. We are a team that handles adversity incredibly well and enjoys the challenge that comes with it.”

San Diego State won the match 5-2 when the teams met last season in Albuquerque, N.M.

“We know SDSU has really good doubles, the Ellison sisters [seniors Roxanne and Sierra] are a tough matchup, and we know that we need to win the doubles point to be successful,” Marshall said.

With two big matches coming, the Lady Frogs carry no serious injuries into the weekend, but a few players still have some minor injuries.

“It’s how the players mentally overcome the small injuries that leads to success,” Marshall said.

One powerful presence on the court has been freshman Stefanie Tan, knocking off several nationally top-ranked singles players. Tan beat No. 23 Mary Anne Macfarlane at Alabama and No. 52 Edyta Cieplucha against SMU.

Marshall said he considered the team’s freshmen to be an advantage due to opposing teams’ inability to scout the player and not knowing the player’s tendencies and history.

The Lady Frogs carry a 10-5 overall record and 2-0 conference record going into the weekend. Although the team is only 1-3 on the road, TCU is 2-0 at neutral sites this season.
