Women’s tennis travels to Wyoming Saturday

The women’s tennis team (12-5) will travel to the high altitude of Laramie, Wyo. to compete Saturday against Wyoming (10-7).

Mental toughness in strange conditions has continued to define TCU this season, head coach Dave Borelli said.

“It’s not really Mountain West, it’s mountain wacky,” he said. “The conditions are so bad at different places that it really isn’t tennis. It just comes down to dealing with it.”

On April 1, TCU won at UNLV in very windy conditions. The victory extended TCU’s winning streak to five matches.

The Lady Frogs trailed the Rebels 3-1, but won the last three singles matches to earn a 4-3 victory.

Wyoming would be another tough test, Borelli said. The Cowgirls would be a difficult opponent, but the high altitude would also be a factor in Laramie.

Junior Federica Denti said TCU would fly out Thursday, a day earlier than the team usually leaves for a road match, to adapt better to the high altitude.

Borelli said despite the conditions, TCU has played well this season.

“The worse it is, the better it is for us,” he said.

The courts would become faster in high altitude, Borelli said. TCU is a strong fast court team, so the ability to handle high altitude would be an advantage, he said.

However the high altitude would not be the only issue, he said. Wyoming was a tough team that would fight hard.

“They have nothing to lose playing at home,” Borelli said.

Wyoming has a 2-1 record in Mountain West play. The Cowgirls are 3-0 in at home this season.

Denti said TCU would expect to win and to stay undefeated in Mountain West play. The Lady Frogs enter the match first place in the conference with a 4-0 record.

The team’s mental toughness was a big factor to the five game winning streak, she said.

Borelli said some of the team’s victories had not been pretty, but how TCU won its matches did not matter to him.

“Just win ugly baby,” he said.
