The winner of the Name the Frog Contest has received an unexpected prize: The Eastland Chamber of Commerce wants him to be grand marshal of RipFest.

The annual festival honors Old Rip, the horned frog that was still alive 31 years after being enclosed in a time capsule in 1897. The town’s event includes a parade, festival, food, vendors and entertainment for families, according to an email from Cecil Funderburgh, executive director of the Eastland Chamber of Commerce.

“The original Old Rip is on display in a window of the courthouse, and everyone has a great time,” he said in an email.

After reading about Kyle Morales’ win on TCU 360, Funderburg said in an email he would extend the invitation to Morales and the TCU community and is considering a TCU themed RipFest.

“I didn’t even think I was going to win,” Morales said. “I didn’t think any of this would have happened.”

The event takes place every year on the first Saturday of October, he said.

This year’s festival would be on Oct. 6. TCU’s football team is scheduled to play Iowa State that Saturday in Fort Worth. Eastland is located about 100 miles west of Fort Worth.

Morales said he plans on inviting his parents and few friends from TCU to join him at the event.

“I don’t think I’ve even been to a big parade,” Morales said. “I think it’ll be a cool experience.”
