TCU associate head coach Randy Mazey will be West Virginia University's head baseball coach next season.

WVU Director of Athletics Oliver Luck announced Mazey's appointment Wednesday in a news release. Mazey replaces Greg Van Zant, whose contract was not renewed after 18 years with West Virginia.

Mazey's head coach appointment came on the heels of the TCU baseball team defeating Ole Miss 7-4 on Monday night contributing to their four wins in the College Station Regional last weekend.

The team will now head to their first Super Regional in two years against UCLA on Friday night.

“As the team has success, individuals get rewarded whether that be players in the draft or coaches getting a raise or assistant coaches getting head coaching jobs," Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle said.

Mazey has served as an assistant coach at TCU for six seasons. His career record as a head coach is 186-159-2.

"He’s such a great coach and he’s been a role model to all of us and not just in baseball, but in the way we live our lives," Jantzen Witte, a red shirt junior, said. "We’re really happy for him and he’s going to do a great job over there."

Mazey will begin his journey as head coach for the Mountaineers next season. With a search for a new assistant coach soon underway, Schlossnagle sees the future as bright.

"Coach Mazy’s been an invaluable part of this program for six years and I’m sure he’ll do a great job," Schlossnagle said. But I’m also sure that we’ll hire someone very talented to take his place."

Schlossnagle said Mazey will travel with TCU's team to the Super Regional and plans to finish out the season with the Frogs.
