TCU Head Football Coach Gary Patterson discusses winning in the Big 12

TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson said winning in the Big 12 comes down to one simple concept: planning.

Ranked at no. 17, TCU football is one of six Big 12 teams making the 2012 USA Today Coaches Poll last week.

During Sunday’s Football Media Luncheon, Patterson emphasized that regardless of whether the competition is in the Mountain West, The Big 12, or any of the conferences the Horned Frogs have called home, the most important aspect is to have a plan.

“All of them are different, and your game plan has to be ‘How do I win this conference?’” Patterson said. “That has to be your goal, it’s not to be in the middle or bottom half. What plan do you have in place to play the top three teams and beat them?”

Patterson said that although it is a new conference, the opponents are not necessarily that.

“We have played Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech and Baylor,” Patterson said. “We understand how physical Kansas State is, and we understand KU (Kansas) has vastly improved.”

Oklahoma, No. 4, West Virginia, No.11, and Texas, No. 15 are the only conference schools ranked above the Horned Frogs in the Coaches Poll, while Oklahoma State, No.19 and Kansas St, No. 21 round out the list for the conference.

“We have to look at the top of the league and say we have to be as good as them,” Patterson said. “I don't know where we rank until we play every team.”

Although Patterson admitted that he does not yet have a concrete plan in place for taking on Big 12 teams, he did say he has a motto.

“You find ways to win by that one point, that is what our motto is,” Patterson said. “We have to be better on special teams, K-State wins games on special teams.”

The talent in the Big 12 is evident, but Horned Frog football team is still ready to compete, Patterson said.

The seniors on this football team have only lost three games, a Fiesta Bowl loss to Boise State in 2010, an overtime game against SMU last season and the 50-48 loss to Baylor in September, Patterson said.

“Our kids know how to work and our kids know how to win,” Patterson said.
