Volleyball finishes Belmont tournament with two wins

The TCU volleyball team wrapped up the Belmont Invitational on Saturday with wins against Alabama A&M and host school Belmont.

The Lady Frogs defeated both schools 3-0 in Nashville, sweeping the second day of the tournament. The Frogs lost 3-1 to the University of Northern Colorado on Friday, the tournament’s opening day.

“Losing the first day really got us upset and we came back with a vengeance,” junior Yvonne Igodan said. “[The loss] was a thorn in our sides, so we took it as a learning lesson and we don’t plan for it to happen again.”

Igodan and her teammate, fifth-year senior Megan Munce, both made the all-tournament team at Belmont. Munce said the tournament helped the team improve on their weaknesses.

“In the past, we’ve always had a lot of trouble with blocking,” Munce said. “Northern Colorado was a tall team and we were able to out-block them. That gave us a little bit of encouragement.”

Coach Prentice Lewis said the team started to work together better as the tournament progressed.

“After the first day, they started clicking much better,” Lewis said. “The biggest issue with the first match was there was no flow.”

TCU will kick off the Nike Invitational Tournament right here on campus on August 31 with a match against SMU. Army and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will also participate in the tournament.
