With wins over Houston Baptist University and University of North Texas, the women’s soccer team’s winning streak increased to 3, bringing their record to 5-3-1.

In the Houston Baptist game on Friday night the Frogs were neck and neck with the Huskies in the first period. The teams went into half time scoreless.

The second half of the game offered the Frogs their victory after an own goal by the Huskies gave the Frogs the lead. HBU was not able to recover from the deficit.

On Sunday, the Lady Frogs took on the University of North Texas Eagles.  Junior Kelly Johnson scored the Frogs’ lone goal in the first period. The Mean Green remained scoreless for the rest of the game.

Along with the wins, junior goalie Vittoria Arnold, maintained a 3 game shutout for the Lady Frogs on the defensive end of the ball. Head coach Eric Bell commented that the defensive effort was, in a word, “fantastic.” 

“This is right where we’re supposed to be as far as from a defending stand point, not giving up goals,” he said.

In future games, Bell said, improving defensive efforts of set pieces would be a pivotal difference between a win and a loss for the Lady Frogs.

On the other end, Bell said the team’s offense still had room to grow. He said the Lady Frogs penetration through the first and second thirds of the field are strong but they lack a scoring finish. 

“I think some of the things we’ve been working on in training are coming through in games which is a positive thing,” he said.

The wins show growth in the Frogs as a team and the possible viability in league play, Bell said. 

“Hopefully if we do our jobs as coaches and these guys apply the information that’s given to them, then we’ll be alright, if not, then we deserve to get what we get," he said.

The Lady Frogs hope to keep their streak alive when they hit the field Sept. 21 against the University of Denver Patriots at 8 p.m.
