Students packed the Brown-Lupton University Union Ballroom Tuesday night to watch men from 12 different fraternities compete for the ultimate crown, the title Mr. ZTA.

Zeta Tau Alpha held its annual philanthropy, Mr. ZTA, to benefit Breast Cancer Education and Awareness. The competition featured a yogurt eating contest, swimsuit competition, and a talent portion.

The event began with a speech from one of the judges, Lewis Paulk, a breast cancer survivor. Paulk discussed his diagnosis and said he developed a better understanding for what women go through, and also gained a new perspective in life.

Moving into the actual competition, the BLUU ballroom echoed with roars of the crowd as they cheered for their favorites in the swimsuit competition.

Although it appeared that most of the participants in the swimsuit competition were comfortable and confident on stage, others were nervous about performing on stage with such a big audience.

Nick Seline, a first-year Sigma Phi Epsilon and business major, said he was nervous about singing the song “I Won’t Give Up,” by Jason Mraz for the talent portion of the competition.

“It’s my first time ever doing this, and from what I’ve seen it’s a fun and good way to raise money,” said Seline. “I’m trying to decide if some of these guys are going to take some of these events really seriously.”

Clare Williams, a sophomore Zeta Tau Alpha member and fashion merchandising major,  said that the talent portion was her favorite part of the competition because the men really got into their performances.

Williams was a coach last year, and this year she coached the winning Phi Gamma Delta team.

“We wanted to entertain everyone while having fun at the same time,” said Williams. “As a whole, we’re very proud of the boys.”
