SGA passes bill to allow piano in Clark Hall

Following more than a month of discussion between SGA and Housing and Residence Life, Clark Residence Hall will soon get a piano.

The SGA House passed a bill allocating $5,000 towards a piano in Clark Hall. Housing and Residence Life (HRL) will pay $2,000 of the piano’s total cost of $7,000.

“We had a lot of people in Clark and Milton Daniel that wanted pianos in their halls,” said Garrett Adair, a Class of 2016 representative who introduced the bill. “What we’re doing here is building our community in our residence halls.”

There was also student support for a piano in Milton Daniel, which will now be the only freshman residence hall without a piano.

“I went around Milton and in an hour I got about 90 signatures,” said TJ Huseman, a freshman living in Milton Daniel.

Adair and fellow Class of 2016 representative Reid Waller introduced a bill in September that allowed them to research getting pianos into both Clark and Milton Daniel.

After that bill passed, Adair approached Director of HRL Craig Allen with the proposal.

“I tried really hard to get one in Milton [Daniel],” said Adair.

Adair said talks with Allen turned from discussions over funding the pianos to getting permission for a piano in the first place.

Adair said he felt if the piano in Clark went well, Milton Daniel would eventually get a piano of its own.

Maintenance of the new piano will be HRL’s responsibility, said Adair.

The bill passed with unanimous support from the SGA House of Representatives.

The House also passed a bill putting its support behind Campus Challenge, a movement to raise awareness among college students about modern-day slavery and human trafficking.

The initiative was created by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).  This federal agency mainly gives economic and developmental aid to foreign countries.

SGA will work to market the Campus Challenge initiative and its website to TCU students.

After both bills were passed, former student representative Jordan Mazurek submitted a motion to formally begin impeachment proceedings against Student Body President Brent Folan.
