LEAPS representatives prepare for fall service

Registration for TCU LEAPS, a campus-wide community service day first held in the spring of 2000, has started.

Taylor Foster, a junior communication studies major and co-marketing director of LEAPS, said leaders are trying to make sure students from all backgrounds participate.

LEAPS representatives will be outside of the Brown-Lupton University Union this week  encouraging students to sign up and assisting with the registration process, Foster said.

Each LEAPS group will be assigned to one of the 25 participating community service sites this year.  Non-profit agencies such as SafeHaven of Tarrant County, Love Never Fails International, Community Food Bank and Catholic Charities are all involved, among others, Foster said.

“LEAPS is a great spring-board to a relationship with the site you volunteer at,” said William Dace, a junior accounting major and LEAPS community liaison coordinator.

Dace said LEAPS exposes people to the Tarrant County community, which is full of volunteer opportunities.

Foster said the goal of LEAPS is to “give people something they really enjoy and have a connection to.”

Dace expects more than 750 students to participate this semester and hopes they will continue to do community service outside of LEAPS.

"LEAPS will offer follow-up opportunities for those who want to go back and volunteer at the same site," Foster said.

“It’s cool because people realize the bigger picture,” Foster said. “We want to cultivate that passion for students.”

Tracie Green, junior strategic communication major and co-marketing director for LEAPS, said, “service is more than a day; it's something you should do as often as you can.”
