A young technology entrepreneur and start-up guru will be on campus Tuesday to discuss his business ventures and share advice with students.

George Mavromaras launched his first company, Mavro Inc., when he was just 20 years old. In 2008, Mavro Inc. debuted its first smartphone application, called the Emergency Medical Spanish Guide. The app is designed to bridge the gap between Spanish-speaking patients and English-speaking medical professionals.

Mavromaras’ other ventures include TexApp Consulting Group LLC, which provides small businesses with affordable access to mobile development services. He also started Praetor Global LLC, a maritime private security company. 

The event will be hosted by the university's Association for Information Systems (AIS) chapter.

AIS is a national professional organization for information systems majors.

Matthew Chinchilla, senior entrepreneurial management major and vice president of alumni relations for AIS, said the university's AIS board has been trying to increase awareness of the organization over the last few years by bringing in speakers.

“Our goal is to give members tools and experiences that they can use to make them more competitive in the job market and get them excited about jobs in technology,” Chinchilla said.

Matthew Clark, a senior business information systems major and vice president of membership development for AIS, said hearing about Mavromaras' experience would be a good opportunity not only for AIS members, but for students of all majors.

“This event is important for students to learn about the possibilities available to them in today’s world and to learn an entrepreneur’s perspective of technology,” he said.

Mavromaras said he is excited to speak at the university because he likes to give back to the DFW community and to stay in contact with students that want to follow-up with him.

“I always enjoy talking to young entrepreneurs, especially ones in college,” he said.

Mavromaras said he would speak about what it takes to run a technology business, and how to bring a technology idea to the business market. He said that most importantly, he likes to talk about his failures and how it redirected his thinking.

“George Mavromaras is a fascinating guy with an interesting story, and it should be a fun event," Chinchilla said.

Mavromaras will speak on Nov. 27 at 6 p.m. in Dan Rogers Hall, room 134.
