Black Student Association holds fashion show to raise funds

The university’s Black Student Association held a fashion show Thursday night to help earn money to attend the Big 12 Leadership Conference in July at Kansas State University.

Shelby Best, president of BSA, said the organization's goal is to send as many students as possible to the conference.

The show was called "Swerve: New Edition," which mixed new and old music for the models to walk down the runway, Best said.

Best, an entrepreneurial management and business information systems double major, said the Big 12 leadership conference would help guide TCU’s BSA to better lead the black student population on campus by teaching leadership skills.

“It’s such an uplifting conference,” Best said. “It energizes you and helps you learn more about yourself and your school.”

Starr Crawford, senior education major, said the goal amount is $10,000.  The group currently has about $2,000 in the bank. Crawford said BSA wants to pay for travel and accommodation expenses to the conference for their members.

Rebecca Semik, junior film, television and digital media and writing double major, said she enjoyed watching her friends act like models strutting down the runway.

She said she enjoyed the business-wear segment because there were a variety of styles and options.

“TCU is a part of the Big 12 now,” Best said. “We must participate in the conference to keep our BSA at the same caliber as other universities."
