SGA and APO to hold blood drive in honor of student

The Student Government Association and Alpha Phi Omega are partnering with the American Red Cross to hold a blood drive in honor of a student recently hospitalized from a motorcycle accident.

Matthew Smith is not only a student at the university but is also an Army veteran who served two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, April Brown, chair of Veteran Services Task Force, said.

Graham McMillan, SGA vice president of external affairs, wrote in an email that members of SGA heard about Smith’s accident and wanted to do something.

“We received information from administration that one of our own Horned Frogs was in the hospital, and we decided to do what we could to help,” McMillan wrote.

According to the American Red Cross’ website, eligibility requirements to give blood include being healthy, being at least 17 years old and having a weight of at least 110 pounds.

The drive will take place Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the BLUU Auditorium.
