Athletes hold teddy bear drive to benefit Cook Children’s Hospital

Collecting teddy bears is the Student-Athlete Advisory Council’s way to give back to the community.

The council is holding Frogs Care with Bears, a teddy bear drive benefiting Cook Children’s Hospital. They will be collecting teddy bears at the next three university men’s and women’s basketball games on Feb. 20, 23 and 27.

“We felt that it would be a good idea to host an event where the Fort Worth community and students can bring teddy bears, and we can donate them to the hospital just to kind of give back for all that they do,” Nelson Head, president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, said.

Cook Children’s gives teddy bears to every child admitted to the hospital, Head said.

“The idea came up last fall," he said. "We have a couple students who volunteer at Cook Children’s Hospital, and we were made aware that they give teddy bears out to every child who is admitted to the hospital."

Student-athletes will be at the entrance of Daniel-Meyer Coliseum during the games to collect the teddy bears, according to the event flyer.

They collected around 30 or 40 at the first game, Head said. They hope to collect around 500 overall.
