The No. 2 rifle team takes on the No. 7 Air Force Academy Saturday in the NCAA Qualifier for a spot in the NCAA Championships.
Both teams are competing for one of the top eight spots at the NCAA Championships. Teams across the country go into their respective matches with their top three scores already calculated.
This final match will be added and averaged with the other three to determine which top eight will go to the championship.
TCU rifle head coach Karen Monez said she is confident about the match.
“Should be another win,” Monez said. “I don’t doubt that in the least.”
Air Force coach Launi Meili said Air Force has placed ninth multiple times and looks to break through to compete in the championship.
TCU is riding a 22-match win streak after their win against UTEP Feb. 2. Senior Sarah Scherer broke her own NCAA record in smallbore with a score of 597.
Freshman Megan Lee said Scherer’s score is encouraging for the team.
“We have the coach that’s going to push us to shoot those record highs because a 597 is a record high. I feel like you can’t do much better than that,“ Lee said. “It’s nice to know that we have everything at our fingertips.”
Until Saturday, the team will continue to practice to stay strong both physically and mentally. Lee said she is looking to improve her individual average, and she aims for a score in the upper 580s.
“The focus is on individual performance," Monez said. "Everybody is at a different level, and they all train differently here on the firing line, and they all have different goals."
Monez said her team is talented mentally, but some players are still developing mental skills.
