The TCU club baseball team begins this season with only six returning players as they gear up to play a three-game series against the University of Nebraska-Lincoln this weekend.

The Horned Frogs are joined by 19 newcomers who will give the team depth and athleticism at every position on the field, Philip Anderson, the team's president and coach, said.

As a group, the team finished last season 1-6, and all losses were by only three runs or less. TCU is a member of the National Club Baseball Association Division VII West.

Returning players include second baseman Jacob Sailors who had a two-run triple in the team's win over Lonestar Kingwood last semester. Tom Elias pitched 9.2 innings with 10 strikeouts and Alex Bauer threw 16 innings with 19 strikeouts during the win against Kingwood.

Justin Unger, a senior kinesiology major, has been on the team for two years and is excited about the upcoming season.

“We have new young players that are fresh and ready to take our team to Georgia this year for the NCBA World Series,” Unger said.

The club team has a roster that will allow Anderson to mix and match players on the field to maximize the team’s chances of success. The team has four right-handed pitchers and 21 position players with experience that will back the mound.

Players to watch this semester are Bernie Garces, Anderson, Mark Lyden and Tommy Jewett. This club will face more competition because the games will be a competition to move on to the playoffs as opposed to exhibitions the team played in the fall, Anderson said.
