TCU kicks off its 15 spring practices Friday with a quarterback battle and old faces in new positions.

The quarterback battle is expected to be between returning starter Trevone Boykin and former all-conference selection Casey Pachall, who returned to the team in January after leaving the program and entering rehab early last season.

According to previous reports, Pachall did not work out during his stint in rehab. He entered rehab following an arrest on suspicion of DWI in October. Pachall played the first four games of 2012, throwing for 948 yards, 10 touchdowns and one interception.

Boykin started the rest of the season and finished with 2,054 yards passing, 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in nine games. He also ran for 417 yards and three touchdowns on 137 attempts.

Redshirt freshman Tyler Matthews is listed as third on the quarterback depth chart. Junior Matt Brown, a quarterback who started last year as a wide receiver, will return to the receiver position.

Elsewhere on the offense, rising sophomore guard Joey Hunt has the top position on the depth chart at left guard, according to the depth chart. Whoever finishes the spring with the position will be replacing Blaize Foltz, who completed his NCAA eligibility. 

Hunt saw playing time at guard and center during last year’s season. Foltz’s younger brother, Brady Foltz, is listed as the second-string player in the position.

The running back position is heavily stacked as sophomore Jordan Moore, a highly-touted defensive player who played special teams last season, joined the running back corps. He will compete for a spot with senior Waymon James, who is recovering from an ACL injury, sophomore B.J. Catalon and transfer sophomore Aaron Green.

Moore practiced at fullback in the post season before TCU's bowl game but did not play in the game due to an undisclosed injury. His status is still questionable for the first practice.

Defensively, senior defensive lineman Jon Koontz is listed as the starting defensive end opposite rising sophomore sensation Devonte Fields. Koontz is slated to compete in the spring with sophomore Josh Carraway for Stansly Maponga’s former spot at left defensive end.

A few other notable changes include Deante’ Gray switching from cornerback to receiver and Jonathan Anderson moving from safety to linebacker. Gray will also see time as the first-string punt and kick returner.

Marcus Mallett and Joel Hasley are listed as starters for linebacker.
