Men’s basketball still looks for conference road win

For the second time in three games, the university men’s basketball team will face a ranked opponent.

This time it is on the road. It is the Frogs' final road game of their inaugural Big 12 season.

TCU’s last conference destination is Manhattan, Kans., to face a Kansas State team trying to stay at the top of the conference.

The ninth-ranked Wildcats have won five straight and nine of their last ten. The Wildcats survived a scare from Baylor when senior guard Rodney McGruder hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to claim a 64-61 win.

With the win, Kansas State (24-5 overall, 13-3 Big 12) stayed in a tie for first place with Kansas. TCU (10-19 overall, 1-15 Big 12), however, remained at the bottom of the Big 12 following its 72-63 loss to Texas Tech.

The Frogs have yet to win a conference game on the road. Each road loss was by 10 points or more except for Saturday’s game against Texas Tech.

Road wins in general have been hard for TCU to find this season. The Frogs lone road win was during non-conference play at Rice on Dec. 22. TCU did grab a win at the South Padre Island Invitational, which was recorded as a neutral site win.

The Frogs' road assignment against Kansas State will require scoring on the conference’s best defense. The Wildcats are holding opponents to 59.7 points per game while posting 69.5.

McGruder puts up almost 15 per game, which ranks fifth in the Big 12. Teammate Angel Rodriguez, a sophomore guard, sits at No. 19 (11.9 per game). Sophomore guard Kyan Anderson leads TCU with 11.6 points per game (No. 7 in Big 12), including 18 against the Red Raiders.

TCU took an early six point lead in the first meeting with Kansas State this season. That changed into a 25 point deficit in the second half, and the Wildcats left with a 67-54 win.

The second meeting will tip-off at 7 p.m. Tuesday with the Frogs battling for their first conference road win of the season.
